Tango Q&A

Questions about tango dancing:

Q: And what is really this thing you call "Tango"?
A: Tango began as a musical style in Argentina and quickly developed into a dance system as well. This happened quite a long ago, think 1900´s, and evolved into what we dance today.

Q: And that is...?
A: Two persons dance together to the music. They dance connected, not just standing in front of each other, but actually in one combined movement. The dance couple is one entity. Ah, and it's all improvised.

Q: What do you mean improvised? There are steps that you need to know, right?
A: I mean anything can happen at any moment. It's about the interaction within the couple. So, no, there are no steps. Sequences of movements will be used for learning purposes naturally. Learning tango is learning about your body and how to communicate with another person through physical contact.

Q: Sounds complicated...
A: Not at all. When you think about it you realise there is no memorization required. You already have had a body since you were born and are familiar with how to move with it. The next step is learning to be aware of how your body language can interact with your dance partner.

Q: And after I learn, will I be dancing with my dance partner all the time?
A: No, you dance with anyone who can be aware of this communication method. The fantastic thing about this is that you can dance with an infinite amount of other people. Think of this the same way you think about learning how to speak a new language. Tango dancers frequently start dancing with someone who they have never met or seen or spoken to; just in the same way you could start a conversation with someone you just met in a street.

Q: Do I need special clothing? Is there a dress code?
A: No, there are no dress codes. Not for lessons and also not for social dancing. You should wear whatever you think is comfortable and whatever you think looks good on you.

Q: And shoes?...
A: You don't need to buy special shoes right away, however, as you'll progress in dancing you will also find it more comfortable to get specialized tango shoes.
To begin with there is one thing to avoid and that is rubber soles. They will make it very hard to pivot your feet on the ground making dancing more difficult and also causing ankle problems. For the guys you would like to simply have any shoe without rubber sole and for the ladies besides the no-rubber rule you would better off wearing shoes with heels (high heels or small heels)

"Argentine Tango for TV Viewers" is a very nice article I happened to come across. A must read for anyone with any type of pre-conceptions or ideas about the real social tango dancing. Highly recommended read. click on the link to read it:
